Did you know? In the United States, one person dies every 19 minutes from a prescription drug overdose. In 2009, more New Hampshire residents died from prescription drug abuse than in car crashes. Abuse of prescription drugs is the fastest-growing drug problem in the United States and in the Greater Sullivan County community, and 16% of Sullivan County high school students report using a prescription drug without a doctor’s permission at least once.

As law enforcement professionals, we are seeing the effects of this epidemic every day. Individual lives and families can be destroyed by this epidemic. That’s why we’re asking you to help us reduce the risk of prescription drug abuse in your homes and neighborhoods.

·         In New Hampshire, one of the most common sources of prescription drugs on the street are thefts from legitimately prescribed patients. Always keep your prescription drugs securely stored. Your medicine cabinet may not be the best choice; consider other secure locations in your house, such as a home safe.

·         Use the upcoming take-back day, to dispose of unwanted prescription drugs safely, with no questions asked. We will be at the station on Claremont Road.

·         Be a good role model for the children in your life. Talk with them about the risks of misusing prescription drugs. Never refer to medicine as ‘candy’ and keep it stored away from food.
